As many San Antonio’s tech company executives will tell you, finding enough highly skilled, talented employees often is an uphill battle. That’s downright frustrating in a city gunning to gain ground in the tech industry.
And as some of San Antonio’s brightest tech minds — who moved here from other countries and are fighting for either renewal of a temporary work visa or permanent citizenship — will tell you, resolving residency issues is a long emotional battle.
So, in support for “smart and comprehensive immigration reform,” some of San Antonio’s key innovators and leaders will take part in an honest discussion on Wednesday night, May 22nd at tech coworking organization Geekdom from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A diverse delegation of San Antonians attended the Chamber of Commerce sponsored SA to DC trip last month.
As expected, sequestration was a primary topic of conversation, as members tried to determine the effect that spending cuts would have on San Antonio’s economy.
As these cuts trickle down into the budgets of various agencies, we know that the largest firms will be advocating and lobbying for their own industries.
However, the voices of small businesses must also be heard — especially since they represent the backbone of our local economy. Therefore, it was energizing to be a part of a very strong Alamo City contingent that joined forces in Washington, D.C., to make sure that the voices of small businesses were also represented in conversations with legislators and agency staff.

Microlender Accion Texas Inc. is sporting a groovy new online look thanks to a website designed by San Antonio’s Sweb Development.
Accion Texas Inc. provides loans and entrepreneurial assistance to small businesses that can’t get capital from traditional banks and lenders. Loans range from $500 to $250,000, and its SBA 504 program offers loans up to $5 million. The nonprofit operates in eight states.
Since applying for a loan and understanding credit is complicated, the site specifically works to simplify the education, application and online payment process.
A few highlights of the new website include individual sections tailored to entrepreneurs, customers, donors, and employees and a live chat for customer service. The site is also integrated with Eventbrite, an events creation and reservations system.

Last Friday, as a couple hundred people descended upon the world-famous Cowboys Stadium (referred to by many as Jerry World, after famed owner and innovator Jerry Jones), the anticipation was palpable. They were about to witness a pitch contest featuring Texas-based startups, but no one had ever held a “pitch contest” in such a large and extraordinary space. Normally the home to 108,000 football fans on Sundays, on Friday the Stadium was to be a hub for innovation, ideas, and dreams. All played out on a 600 ton JumboTron hanging 90 feet above the field.
Attendees weren’t quite sure what to expect, only that like all good things in Texas, it would be BIG. Hosted by Startup Texas, a region of the Startup America Partnership, this pitch contest, affectionately titled the “Startup Texas: 2 Minute Drill” was created to feature some of the brightest startups from across the state. With eight young companies from Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, the event was an opportunity to showcase the amazing innovation taking place all over our huge state.
