1. Instagram Tests Algorithmic Feed
Following in Facebook’s footsteps, Instagram will soon be filtering which photos you see first in your feed. The idea is to show you more of what you want to see and less of what you don’t want, but as this Forbes article argues, aren’t we capable of deciding that for ourselves?
2. Twitter’s Algorithmic Timeline Is Now On By Default
We mentioned last month that Twitter was playing with algorithm changes, and now the algorithm is live by default for all users. Don’t want your timeline to change? Disable “Show me the best tweets first” under timeline personalization in your settings.
3. Uber Goes All In On Food Delivery With Standalone UberEATS App
Previously offered within the original app in select cities, Uber is expanding its food delivery service with the independent app, UberEATS. Although the service is still only available in a small number of major cities, it plans to expand as it grows. The ride sharing app also now allows users to create shared family accounts.
4. Oculus Rift Will Have 30 Full Games Available At Launch
The Facebook-owned virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift, is due to launch on March 28, and users will be able to purchase 30 full games with more due out this spring.
5. Google’s Latest Search Algorithm Makes Mobile-Friendly Sites Even More Important
Although Google has long favored mobile-friendly sites, starting in May it will penalize sites that aren’t mobile-friendly even more. Don’t have a mobile-ready site? Give us a shout!
6. Facebook’s Messenger Bot Store Could Be The Most Important Launch Since The App Store
As messaging apps become more popular, bots that help automate tasks within those apps are on the rise as well. Facebook is rumored to be announcing an entire Bot Store within its Messenger app, which is anticipated to bring us into a whole new web frontier. 7. Instagram Now Displays The Actual Date Of Posts, Not Just The Number Of Weeks
Up until now, Instagram has always shown the the age of photos by how many weeks ago it was taken. Now Instagram displays the actual date it was shared instead. Although it doesn’t change the user experience, it does make it easier to remember exactly when you took that coffee photo last year.
8. Google Scored A Huge Win Against Amazon By Landing Apple As A Customer
Google has entered the cloud-computing arena and just brought on Apple as a customer. Although Apple still uses Amazon Web Services as well, it doesn’t bode well for Amazon, especially as more big tech companies sign up for Google’s services.
9. DeepGram Lets You Search Through Lectures And Podcasts For Your Favorite Quotes
The web-based audio search tool allows users to quickly index and search audio recordings for specific words. Similar to YouTube’s auto-subtitling abilities, DeepGram takes it a step further in making the audio searchable.
10. Google’s new Resizer tool lets mobile Web designers and developers test any URL
Google recently launched Resizer, a new tool for web developers that makes it easier to test any URL across desktop and mobile platforms.
